To celebrate the 10th anniversary of the 2003 Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage, the Sofia Centre together with the Sofia History Museum and the Municipality of Sofia, organize an exhibition “Colours from the past: ancient embroideries from Sofia region”.

The Sofia History Museum takes pride in its rich collection of over 500 embroideries, typical of the Sofia region. They have been gathered separately from the traditional costumes which are known for their remarkable and rich embroidery decoration, a result of the female domestic crafts. The earliest embroideries in the collection date back to the early nineteenth century, but they perfectly illustrate the colorfulness and rich ornamentation of the olden days, specific to this region. Having been purchased or donated, they are an important evidence of the specifics and the richness of the textile art in the Sofia region.The exhibition aims to present and promote the rich heritage of embroideries, typical of the Sofia region.

The exhibition was inaugurated on December 12 by the Mayor of Sofia Ms Yordanka Fandakova and by the Bulgarian element inscribed on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of UNESCO-Bistritsa babi.

The period of the event is December 12-28, 2013 at the building on Paris 1 street in Sofia.
