The ninth session of the Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage (9.COM) started on 24 November and will continue until 28 November 2014 at UNESCO Headquarters, Paris.

On 25 November the Committee examined and inscribed three traditions from Kenya, Uganda and Venezuela on the List of Intangible Cultural Heritage in Need of Urgent Safeguarding due to their vulnerability and threats to their survival.

On 26 and 27 November the Committee examined 46 nominations for possible inscription in 2014 on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. The new elements inscribed on the Representative List by Member States of the Regional centre for the Safeguarding of Intangible Cultural Heritage in South-Eastern Europe under the auspices of UNESCO are the following:

• Armenia – Lavash, the preparation, meaning and appearance of traditional Armenian bread as an expression of culture
• Bosnia and Herzegovina – Zmijanje embroidery
• Bulgaria- The carpet-making tradition of Chiprovski kilimi
• Greece – Know-how of cultivating mastic on the island of Chios
• Serbia – Slava, celebration of family saint patron’s day
• The former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia – Kopachkata, a social dance from the village of Dramche, Pijanec
• Türkiye Ebru – Turkish art of marbling

The multinational nomination submitted by Croatia – The former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia – Serbia – Romania – Republic of Moldova – Türkiye – Spring celebration: Hidrellez or Saint George’s day was referred by the Committee.
