‘Intangible Cultural Heritage: Next Generation’

Rules and general terms of participation:

To mark the 75th Anniversary of the establishment of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization – UNESCO (November 16, 1945), and 65 years since Bulgaria’s accession to it, the Regional Centre for the Safeguarding of Intangible Cultural Heritage in South-Eastern Europe is proud to announce a Youth Competition in recording and presenting elements of the Intangible Cultural Heritage on the subject of: Intangible Cultural Heritage: Next Generation’.

Goals:

  • Provoke interest and involvement of the younger generation in the safeguarding and transmission of the intangible cultural heritage;
  • Promote mutual awareness and recognition of the intangible cultural heritage of South-East Europe;
  • Stimulate broad public attention within the entire region to the importance of safeguarding and promoting the ‘living heritage’.

Organizer: Regional Centre Sofia – UNESCO

Co-organizers: The National Commission for UNESCO of the Republic of Bulgaria and L’Institut Français de Bulgarie.

Participants: Young people between 18 and 35 years of age, nationals of the Member States within the scope of the Sofia Regional Centre: the Republic of Albania, the Republic of Armenia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, the Republic of Bulgaria, the Republic of Croatia, the Republic of Cyprus, Georgia, the Hellenic Republic, the Republic of Moldova, Montenegro, the Republic of North Macedonia, Romania, the Republic of Serbia, the Republic of Slovenia, the Republic of Türkiye, and Ukraine.

General terms:

Eligible for participation in the competition is any citizen of the the Member States within the scope of the Regional Centre Sofia aged between 18 and 35 years of age. The applicants are required to prepare a presentation of an element of the intangible cultural heritage from their respective area that should contain both a textual description and visual content.

Important notice: The proposed element DOES NOT have to be inscribed on the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage.

The thematic frameworks to which the young participants must adhere are the five domains of the intangible cultural heritage defined pursuant to the 2003 UNESCO Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage:

  • Oral traditions and expressions, including language as a vehicle of the intangible cultural heritage;
  • Performing arts;
  • Social practices, rituals and festive events;
  • Кnowledge and practices concerning nature and the universe;
  • Тraditional craftsmanship.

The participants are welcome to present practices derived from arts and crafts, dance and music, performing arts, culinary skills, rites and rituals and other variations of the ICH of their choice.

Deadline for submission – 08 October 2021

Official languages of the competition – English and Bulgarian

Prize:

The prize is a 3-day trip to Paris for the 3 winning entrants, where they will have the opportunity to tour the UNESCO Headquarters, view the cultural wealth accumulated in it, as well as visit other cultural sites in the French capital.
